  16. Environmental information of the type you are seeking is indeed
  17. spread far and wide, and compiling the ultimate environmental
  18. database would be a Herculean task.  Even the EPA does not have a
  19. single database of environmental statistics for the U.S.  They do,
  20. however, have some subject-specific databases that you may have
  21. access to, the most obvious being the Toxic Release Inventory.

  23. The United Nations Environment Programme releases subject-specific
  24. studies containing lots of quantitative data, as does the OECD.  
  25.  
  26. The best compilation of tabular data on the environment that I know
  27. of is World Resources Institute's biannual _World Resources_ report.

  29. I recently saw a brochure for an educational package of health,
  30. economic, environmental, and demographic data on CD for
  31. Macintosh.  It is based on HyperCard, and allows students to select 
  32. sets of data and constructs tables, graphs, and charts all within one 
  33. software environment.  It is called PEMD Discovery and is sold by PEMD
  34. Education Group, 707-894-3668 (US).

  36. For periodicals, there is a hard-copy index at most libraries called 
  37. something like "Environmental Abstracts."  The University of 
  38. California Santa Barbara has an Environmental Periodicals Bibliography 
  39. project; searches can be requested by e-mail and for a fee they will 
  40. search their extensive CD-rom library.
