- For all of the people out there that do not understand the full
- ramifications of the proposed observatory, here is the full posting,
- taken from Student EnviroLink. I think it is relatively clear that
- there are some much larger issues involved than John McCarthy's twisted
- version science.

- ACTION ALERT
- LEGISLATION ON THE HORIZON TO PROTECT
- MT GRAHAM - IF YOU ACT NOW
- July 17, 1992 Washington, DC--Friends of Mt. Graham and the San
- Carlos Tribal Council have been active in Washington, DC asking
- members of Congress to help halt the telescope project and to
- protect our mountain. The reasons for doing so are myriad. As a
- biological sky-island Mt. Graham is unparalleled. As the
- birthplace of San Carlos Apache heritage, culture and religion,
- Dzil nchaa si an (Mt. Graham) is most important. As a chance to
- reverse important breeches in our environmental and cultural
- protection laws, the fight to protect Mt. Graham is crucial. What
- was undone in the University of Arizona's attempt to erect a Tower
- of Babel on Mt. Graham, must be corrected. We have friends in the
- 102nd Congress in Washington. Several Members have expressed
- interest in legislation to protect Mt. Graham. Currently, the
- lead person in this growing movement in Congress is Mr. Jim Jontz,
- from Indiana. Mr. Jontz is willing to sponsor a bill to correct
- the errors inherent in Title VI of the Arizona-Idaho Conservation
- Act (the rider that mandated the first three telescopes on Mt.
- Graham and exempts the projects from numerous laws). However, he
- will need the support of other members of the Interior Committee.
- You can play a key role in the introduction and passing of this
- legislation by calling or writing the nearest Congressperson on
- the Interior committee listed below. You could also make a
- difference by calling or writing the people listed as potential
- supporters and asking them to co-sponsor this legislation. Note
- that the Congresspeople marked with an "*" are in need of extra
- pressure. Write them as well as your own people. Also call or
- write your own representative and ask them to co-sponsor and
- support this bill when it is introduced. At this time, we do not
- have a bill number. Keep in contact with us as introduction of
- the bill is possible at any time. Call the above telephone number
- or contact the good folks at Save America's Forest: (202)
- 544-9219. Thank you for your support.

- ______________________________________________ Document three
-
- The Honorable _____________________ United States House of
- Representatives Washington, DC 20515
-
- Dear Congressman __________________,
-
- It has come to my attention that the University of Arizona in
- Tucson Arizona is leading a consortium of International partners
- in building a telescope complex on the top of Mt. Graham in
- southern Arizona. Mt. Graham is a very important from a
- biological standpoint being the southernmost intact Spruce-Fir
- forest and is home to at least eighteen endemic plant and animal
- species, including the Mt. Graham Red Squirrel. Mt. Graham (or
- Dzil nchaa sm `n) is also the most sacred mountain of the San
- Carlos Apache Tribe.
-
- The University of Arizona managed to lobby through Congress a bill
- in November of 1988 that the Courts interpret as exempting the
- telescope project from both our nation's environmental laws and
- cultural protection laws for Native Americans. I am very
- concerned about this dangerous precedent.
-
- It has also come to my attention that there is a move afoot in
- Washington to bring the Mt. Graham Observatory project back into
- compliance with our nations' laws. At the urging of Friends of
- Mt. Graham and the San Carlos Apache Tribal Council, Mr. Jontz
- (the congressman from Indiana and a member of the Interior
- committee) is interested in sponsoring legislation. If he is to
- do so, he needs the support of other members of the committee.
-
- As a citizen from your district, I urge you to support this
- legislation and consider becoming an original co-sponsor. If you
- do so, you would have my full support.
-
- Thank you for helping to protect another piece of our natural
- heritage and the rights of native peoples.
-
- Sincerely,
-
