- Cloaked in the cloying muck of my misery I staggered streetward from
- the alleyway. Furtive, frightened glances first left then right
- revealed the thoroughfare to be thoroughly bare, but the naked terror
- of what I'd just been through threw stinging bolts up and down my
- spine. I felt like my peripheral nerves had been yanked out like so
- many weeds and replaced with tentacles from an angry Portuguese
- man-o'-war.
-
- Exposed now on the street, I wanted nothing more than to regain my
- lost anonymity and seclusion. My bootheels made barely audible
- grinding noises on the pavement, the music of the city's erosion in
- geologic time. Sodium vapor lights struggled against the darkness,
- turning the avenues to luminescent strings of aging pearls, each a
- static pool of white-orange.
-
- The street was crowded with crumbling brownstones, their windows
- staring out at me black and lifeless as a doll's eyes.
-
- I had travelled barely 50 meters when I saw the emerald eyes glowing,
- glowering at me from a basement window. As I began to run, my scream
- was a dry heave of fear and anguish.
-
- With the wail of rending metal, the streetlight ahead heaved suddenly
- toward me and recoiled only slightly backward as 300 kilograms of
- muscle and claws landed on it. My brain registered the sickening flap
- of leathery wings and claws on hollow metal as the thing struggled to
- keep it's perch. Looking up I saw its inky silhouette against the
- night sky, two glowing green eyes at the event horizon of its black
- bulk.
-
- I shot off the sidewalk for the other side of the street. I was
- halfway across in two strides, dimly aware of an increasing roar to my
- right even as I heard, felt, the thud as the thing leapt down to the
- sidewalk in pursuit of its prey. I was half a meter in the air over
- the curb when the screech of brakes sent the final rush of adrenalin
- coursing through my ravaged veins. As I slumped to the concrete, I
- heard the snapping of thick bones and metal and the slapping of wings
- on asphalt. Two points of green light went grey and then winked out. I
- was smiling as I slipped into darkness.
