  19. Yeah, I've always had that problem too. I think the American media
  20. coined the term "homophobia" because of the tendency of some people to
  21. use the term "homo" to mean "homosexual" which just goes to show how
  22. stupid the media can be--and how ignorant: the term "homo" has a
  23. negative connotation and should not have been used in any "official"
  24. media term. I always chuckle when someone says "homophobia" or
  25. "homophobic" because if it is going to take on a sexual connotation,
  26. then it means "afraid of people of the same sex"...that is, a homophobic
  27. man would be afraid of men (any man) and a homophobic woman would be
  28. afraid of women (any woman). Yet another example of how influential the
  29. media can be, and of how it can misuse its influence...

  31. Actually, I guess homophobia could also mean "fear of being the same" or
  32. more abstractly "fear of conformity" which is (kind of) exactly opposite
  33. of what it is used to mean... :D

  38. same sex" but even *that* isn't the meaning it has taken on ("fear of
  39. people who have sexual relations with people of the same sex"))  <whew!>
