  17. Actually this is a relief. Criticism of my editorial skills doesn't
  18. offend me (though obviously I disagree, or I wouldn't be here; I
  19. do, however, cheerfully admit to being a rookie editor - give
  20. me a shot; y'ain't seen the magazine yet).

  22. A few points of clarification:

  24. 1. Chaney submitted two pieces to me. One I'm not especially thrilled
  25. by. The other, however, is the Susan B. Anthony piece, which does
  26. in fact raise interesting issues, which is why I like it. Whether
  27. or not I agree with its thesis, the factual details are intriguing.
  28. I consider this a valid reason for printing it.

  30. 2. Very few people have submitted material, making it difficult for me
  31. to apply a high editorial standard. It is indeed possible that,
  32. given a larger number of articles to choose from, I would make
  33. different decisions. But ya gotta start somewhere. I can't just
  34. throw up my hands because I'm not being snowballed with high -
  35. quality articles. My hope is that with some persistence I can
  36. eventually reach that point.

  38. Today I received an excellent set of diaries written by a person who 
  39. defended clinics against Operation Rescue, which I intend to print. 
  40. I doubt I would have received these if I hadn't been persistent; 
  41. if anything, getting into this wrangle seems to have finally 
  42. increased the volume of submitted material. The magazine can't 
  43. possibly have a perfect first issue. And by accepting Chaney's 
  44. material and challenging his opponents to counter him, I have indeed 
  45. obtained some quality material I wouldn't have received otherwise!
  46. There's a madness to my method. (:
