- Subject: Feminist Bioethics Network
- Sender: Society for Women in Philosophy Information and Discussion List
- --------------------------------------------------------------------
- Several International Networks are being formed in conjunction with the
- forthcoming Inaugural Congress of the International Association of Bioethics.
- Among them is a Network on Feminist Approaches to Bioethics which we shall be
- coordinating. We envision a more inclusive theory of bioethics, one that would
- encompass the experiences of women and other martinalized social groups,
- examine how the principles that dominate the prevailing discourse may favor
- those already empowered, create new nethodologies, and look closely at the
- legitimizing function of mainstream bioethics. Useful points of departure are
- the works of susan Sherwin YNo Longer Patient: Feminist Ethics and Health
- Care, Temple University Press, 1992" and the several authors in _Feminist
- Perspectives in Medical Ethics_ edited by Helen Bequaert Holmes and Laura
- Purday, Indiana University Press, 1992. Plans are to meet at the Congress in
- Amsterdam (Oct. 5-7, 1992) to determine the scope of our future activities,
- e.g., ongoing exchanges of information, resources, future conference planning,
- etc. The Congress Secretariat will forward to us the names and addresses of
- those who circle this network when they register for the Congress.
-
- However, many interested feminist may not be able to attend the Congress.
- Cost, scheduling and program are all factors. So we would like your responses
- BEFORE we go to Amsterdam so that your views can be taken into account as we
- plan the future acitvities of the network there. If you are interested, please
- write to one or the other of us by September 15th giving your preferred
- address, phone numbers and any e-mail address. Also, please comment on one or
- more of these:
-
- 1. Where are the needs and how do you think such a network might meet them?
-
- 2. What sorts of resources should the network provide?
-
- 3. Do you have program suggestions for subsequent meetings?
-
- 4. Would you serve on a steering committee or a program planning committee--
- or contribute in some other way?
-
- If you think you might be able to atten the Congress in Amsterdam and you
- have not received registration materials, write to:
-
- Congress Secretariat, International Ass'n. of Bioethics c/o Health Council,
- P.O. Box 90517 2509 LM The Hague The Netherlands.
-
- Would you pass this information on to other feminists working in bioethics who
- might also be interested in participating? We look forward to working with
- you.
