- A physical exam might be a good first step, on the other hand it may
- not do any good at all because there may not be an organic basis to the prob-
- lem. In my own case I first went to an Internal Medicine doctor. He checked
- me out, did some lab work, then told me I looked okay. He "prescribed" Advil
- (ibuprofen) for my panic ("anxiety") attacks. Need I say the Advil did no
- good and I was stuck with a $120 doctor bill.
- A couple of months later I decided the I.M. didn't know his butt from
- a hole in the ground, so I went to the local university psychiatric clinic
- which has very reasonable rates and they also did a physical exam, they talked
- to me about my symptoms, then they prescribed a tricyclic antidepressant which
- worked wonders for me. My panic attacks ceased. Continued psychotherapy
- helped me deal with problems that caused my anxiety. And after about three
- years I was able to cope with my problems and they tapered me off medication
- and I have been doing alright for nearly a year now.
- My suggestion (for most people that is) is to start out at a psychia-
- tric clinic. They will do a physical exam -- this way you won't have to pay
- for it twice. Perhaps the only time it might be best not to start with a
- psych exam is if you don't have any problems causing you a great deal of
- mental stress. If that is true, then starting out with your favorite GP/FPr/
- IM doctor might be alright. But if you lead a very stressful life you would
- probably be better off starting with a psychiatrist.
- Advil? For panic attacks? Who did that nitwit think he was trying
- to kid?
