- MapleV is about to be available on NeXT platforms. It is a debugged
- version of the earlier announced one. I just finished running it
- through its paces and it works great. Some features were missing
- from the frontend, such as conversion of "cell" contents from formatted
- to unformatted and back (maple uses the term "prettyprint" for formatted
- text) by menu selection, but I think this will be forthcoming.(This can
- be done using the appropriate maple commands). The (NeXT specific)
- kernel bugs and frontend bugs are mostly gone and this is an excellent
- first version of maple on this platform. The help files are the usual
- ones for maple, on the NeXT they open in seperate windows as do plots.
- The only suggestion I have here is that the Maple people make the help files
- available as ordinary text so they can be accessed under digital librarian.
- That way, you don't have to start up another copy of maple to look at
- a help file while the system is chugging along with a big compute.
- Of course, you could always just launch two copies of maple, one for
- "help" and the other for heavy computes, if you're into that like me.
- As maple becomes more and more oriented as a "frontend" capable system
- I think we will see perhaps the best commercial computer algebra system
- available - in terms of all-around capability.
- This system is generally very efficient for symbolic computation
- and the I have to say that in my experience, the Waterloo folks
- offer excellent support for their customers. I recommend this first
- version of maple on NeXT platforms as a great start. I really look
- forward to future versions.
- I'm not connected with the developers of MapleV in any way, just a
- pleased customer.
