  14. MapleV is about to be available on NeXT platforms.  It is a debugged
  15. version of the earlier announced one.  I just finished running it
  16. through its paces and it works great.  Some features were missing
  17. from the frontend, such as conversion of "cell" contents from formatted
  18. to unformatted and back (maple uses the term "prettyprint" for formatted
  19. text) by menu selection, but I think this will be forthcoming.(This can
  20. be done using the appropriate maple commands).  The (NeXT specific) 
  21. kernel bugs and frontend bugs are mostly gone and this is an excellent
  22. first version of maple on this platform.  The help files are the usual
  23. ones for maple, on the NeXT they open in seperate windows as do plots. 
  24. The only suggestion I have here is that the Maple people make the help files
  25. available as ordinary text so they can be accessed under digital librarian.
  26. That way, you don't have to start up another copy of maple to look at
  27. a help file while the system is chugging along with a big compute.
  28. Of course, you could always just launch two copies of maple, one for
  29. "help" and the other for heavy computes, if you're into that like me.
  30. As maple becomes more and more oriented as a "frontend" capable system
  31. I think we will see perhaps the best commercial computer algebra system
  32. available - in terms of all-around capability.  
  33.  This system is generally very efficient for symbolic computation 
  34. and the I have to say that in my experience, the Waterloo folks 
  35. offer excellent support for their customers.  I recommend this first
  36. version of maple on NeXT platforms as a great start.  I really look
  37. forward to future versions.
