- This is pretty out-of-the-way, but maybe somebody out there
- can help me. The following inference scheme is invalid for
- certain adjectives.
- x is an ADJ N
- Thus, x is a N.
- For instance, from the fact that x is a former head of dept,
- it certainly doesn't follow that x is a head of dept.
-
- Now, I once long ago read a discussion of these "alienating
- adjectives" but I cannot now find it. I could have sworn
- it was in something by Peter Geach, but I cannot find it in
- *Logic Matters* or *Reference and Generality*. Anyone knowing
- a good discussion of this matter, or even just knowing more
- about this than what I've posted, please respond by email.
- (I don't think the groups will be too interested.)
- Thanks.
- B-o} Michael
