- +|The usual afternoon thunderstorm buildup occurred yesterday with
- +|a large one in the early stages as it passed overhead here in
- +|Denver as headed to the east. As I looked at the underside, I noticed
- +|the usual twisted, boiling, texture, but mixed in among the white and
- +|grey was yellow. This was reported by radio amateurs on the severe
- +|weather net so it must be a common occurrance in pre-tornadic activity.
- +|What is it? And what does it mean to a tornado chaser?
- +
- +Do you remember what time of the day this event occurred? If perhaps it was
- +near sunset, you could have been observing the yellow light of the sun filter-
- +ing through translucent parts of the cloud deck. I assume what you were
- +observing was base of a shelf cloud which typically is not very "thick"
- +and can allow light to pass through it in spots.
-
- It was early afternoon, about 2 pm, but the sun was in the general
- direction of the area of the cloud I was looking.
- +
- +Odd-colored clouds do not necessarily mean a tornado is going to occur.
- +I have observed tornadoes in which the clouds were your typical shades
- +of grey. However, I have notices on many occasions that precip cores
- +in some intense hailstorms have a very pronounced aquamarine tinge to them.
- +I think this has something to do with the refraction of the light by the
- +ice chunks, but I'm not really sure.
-
- The hams on the severe weather net talk about the training they received
- to do the reporting. They mentioned the yellow after I saw it, so I
- thought along will wall clouds, circular motion, lowering and other
- terms I don't know, yellowing was one of them and part of their training.
