- I've been thinking about a different design for lightning location
- detection. My approach would use a wideband receiver at 611 MHz
- that has a bandwidth of 2 to 3 MHz. The antennae would be omni
- directional. A clock will be syncronized at each receive site to
- tag the data samples taken from the detection of a noise burst.
- A central computer would match up the signature waveforms and
- compare timings. Then based on the difference in timing between
- each site's reception, the location can be estimated. The accuracy
- would be based on the bandwidth resolution of the waveform signature
- of each strike.

- At 9 kHz, you have to depend on received directionality. If you have
- only a few sites, you lose resolution at the greater distances the
- fewer sites have to deal with. Each site also has to have multiple
- discreet direction antenna, since you don't have the time to turn
- a signal notch antenna around to find the direction as you would with
- a continuous wave (ordinary signal direction finding).
