-
- Yes, it's true, the first Macs used drives with (a few) different speeds.
- And its also true that you can't change the speed of a hard disk as fast
- as the head moves.
-
- But you don't need to change the speed of the mechanical parts to
- achieve what you want (denser recording on the outer cylinders).
- You just have to increase the data rate, so that bits are recorded more
- densely. For this you only need a controller chip and drive electronic
- that can handle different data rates, but the existing ones are fairly
- flexible.
-
- This method hasn't been used on older hard disks, because sector mapping
- was done in the computer and it was impossible to implement this wierd
- mapping in every operating system.
- But it is used today with e.g. the SCSI drives, where the computer does
- only a trivial sort of sector mapping and the real sector mapping happens
- in the controller that is on the hard drive. Controller and hard drive
- form one unit there, specifically designed to work together. So it's easy
- to implement any trick you like, because it doesn't show on the outside.
-
- To return to Macs:
- The newer ones have standard floppy drives and use the method of varying
- the data rate too (it's much cheaper than to use a special floppy drive).
