- No, the FCC has not yet picked a standard. The date when one will be picked
- varies depending on who you talk to, but I believe that the "official"
- response is sometime in mid-1993.
-
- What IS known so far - at least until Uncle Charlie changes his collective
- mind - is that the standard will be require to "peacefully co-exist" with
- current NTSC broadcasters during some transition period, and that it will
- be required to use the current 6 MHz-wide TV channels. This means that
- whatever standard is chosen will be some form of digitally-encoded and
- rather highly-compressed system. There are at least four contenders so far,
- but each has certain drawbacks (non-square pixels, interlaced scan, and
- refresh rates no higher than 60 Hz, in various combinations among the four).
-
- I have been at least peripherally involved via some participation in a
- SMPTE digital image standards committee, and from what I see there, the "final
- answer" is as yet far from clear.
