  33. Actually, there are TWO soundtracks on an LD: an ANALOG soundtrack and
  34. (on later discs) a digital one as well. Even new LDs maintain the analog
  35. soundtrack to remain compatible with older players. Some discs have
  36. supplementary material in the analog tracks (e.g. Criterion's Close
  37. Encounters or the CAV Bond discs). But what I'm talking about here is a
  38. (theoretical) new format which uses the 12" laser-read disc, but stores
  39. analog audio information in the space where analog video information is
  40. stored on a laserdisc. Since the bandwidth requirements are so much
  41. lower for audio, perhaps such a disc would be spun more slowly (like
  42. 33-1/3 RPM ;-).
