- Well in a nutshell Dolby A was developed for the recording
- industry and used about more than 3 bands which were equalised
- depending on signal level. When Dolby wanted to produce a consumer
- version they produced Dolby B which has 2 bands to which EQ is
- applied coz it was cheaper than doing the full Dolby A. Then
- after a while it was as cheap to do another band which helps
- on higher performance tape materials. Recently Dolby have
- brought out Dolby S again initally for the recording industry,
- this has lots of bands and is meant to provide a better SNR than
- digital systems. Dolby S is now available commerically.
-
- I think thats about it, maybe the exact number of bands is wrong
- but Ive described the general idea.
