  29. advised me of passages in Plato: _Phaedrus_, 255c and _Alcibiades I_, 132d
  30. ff.  For some reason, I keep thinking of the Eleatics, but so far all
  31. efforts to find the guilty parties have failed.  Likewise, Plotinus seems
  32. to be silent on this issue, though there is a lovely passage treating
  33. objects of sense in matter as having the same kind of reality as images in
  34. an invisible and formless mirror (_Ennead_ III.6.13).  Eyes and mirrors are
  35. treated at length in _The Mirror and the Lamp_ by M.H.Abrams; however I
  36. would like to see a more recent source.
