- After a small financial windfall, I bought some Fujinon 10x70s, which
- are wonderful in many ways, but which, because of bulk and the need to
- use a tripod, I find I don't use as much as I might with a smaller,
- hand-holdable model. It's not exactly that I'm filled with regret,
- but I now realize that smaller models, perhaps especially those
- with a cheaper, 'knockabout' character, are *not* necessarily
- a poorly-satisfactory compromise; they may be, in the long run,
- exactly what you want.
-
- Dickson and Dyer, in _The Backyard Astronomer's Guide_, (Camden House,
- 1991), say that after considerable testing they recommend Adlerblick
- 7x50 or 10x50 (~$290, ~$280 from Orion, by no means the cheapest place)
- or the Celestron Ultimas in those sizes. Celestron also has an Ultima
- 8x56.
-
- Also, they say, "Several models of the Celestron standard line ['Pro';
- approx. $150] and Swift Instruments' 7x50s and 10x50s in the $150 to
- $200 range are good values. Another recommendation in this price
- range is the Bausch & Lomb 7x50 legacy."
-
- It's not clear what's lacking in Orion's $90-$100 'Explorer' models;
- specs sound OK. Maybe someone on the net has some hands-on experience
- to share....
