- Greetings, Fellow Scouters!
-
- Here's what I think is a good Scoutmaster's Minute. It was told to my
- father when he was a scout. His Scoutmaster was stepping down (after
- 10 or so years, I think), and on the last Troop Meeting, as a farewell
- address, he said this. I am writing it as best I remember it.
-
- Yours in Scouting,

- I AM THIRD
-
- When I entered college years ago, I had a roommate in the dorms posted
- a sign on the inside of the door which read, "I am third." When I
- asked what this meant, he replied, "If I get through college, I'll
- tell you."
-
- Well, during the four years of college, this young man studied hard
- and earned good grades. All the while, however, he did not forget his
- fellow students who needed help, and he worked hard at his church as
- well. Other students were amazed at his attitude in a cut-throat
- competitive school. He was always courteous and considerate. This,
- of course, made him well-respected. And all during this time, that
- sign was still there: "I am third."
-
- Finally, a day before graduation, I asked him, "Now that we are both
- graduating, tell me what your sign means."
-
- He answered, "It's very simple. That is my guiding rule. It is so I
- remember that God is first, other people come second, and I AM THIRD."
