- Any new sugggestions..
-
- I have a 87 Chevy G20 Van with 42K miles. I bought it three months ago
- and have not been able to correct an annoying vibration problem. The
- vibration can be felt though the floor (seat) and occurs at approx. 25
- MPH and above 50 MPH. The vibration at 25-30 usually happens when the
- auto trans upshifts to second and is more noticable under acceleration.
- The vibration above 50 MPH is barely detectable and related to vehicle
- speed.
-
- I suspected the drive shaft, of course, and removed the full shaft and had
- all bearings replaced (although they seemed ok) and the center support
- bearing (bushing was worn allowing shaft play). This didn't seem to
- have any effect on the problem. I was careful to reassemble the shaft
- with the correct phase (as illustrated in my shop manual).
-
- I then took the van to a drive shaft specially shop. He tested it on
- vehicle by running it in drive with wheels allevated. He told me that
- the shaft ran true (no runout) with no vibration. He then recommended
- that I have the rear-end bearings checked because "the shaft couldn't be
- causing the vibration at 25 MPH".
-
- Before the shaft was rebuild, I had the transmission checked-out by a trans
- shop. My local mechanic inspected the motor and transmission mounts and
- doesn't think that the vibration can be from the rear ("a bad bearing
- would cause a continuous whining sound").
-
- QUESTIONS:
-
- Did the drive shaft shop adequately check-out the shaft? Could the low
- speed vibration be coming from the shaft even though it looked good at
- no load? Could this simply be a poorly balanced shaft? If not the
- shaft, then what else in the drive train could be causing this
- vibation?
-
- Any suggestions would be welcome...
