Well I used to drive a 77 Nova with the 250 L6 (at least until the
lady in the 240Z shortened it by a foot and a half). This car
would get in the mid teens city and actually about 20 MPG on long
highway runs. The carb on the bloody thing had always been a bit
screwed. I had assumed that it was a combination of early generation
pollution control stuff and a flaky electric choke. I was never able
to optimize the mileage, I tried to optimize to keep it from stalling.
Even so I got very good at the Nova accelerator oscillation routine.
One bit of advice, if it stalls on you on the road hit your emergency
flashers FIRST before you start you restart routine, even if you are
well off the road. My Nova is no more because 240Z did 35 mph in to
the back bumper while I was at the side of the road. That was back
in january and my leg still has the remainents of a nasty hematoma
where my shin decelerated against the steel dashboard as the Nova
was pushed into a fence.
