- Please excuse this display of ignorance :-)

- I'm considering buying a '90 Grand Voyager. It has 40K (!) miles on it,
- and the inside of the tail pipe is covered with black stuff that rubs off.
- So, does this indicate bad news for the engine; or is it normal for a motor
- with 40K on it (it's the 3.3 liter V6)? (They're asking $12k for a pretty
- well-equipped vehicle).
-
- Should I get a compression check, and if so, how on earth do I interpret
- the results?
-
- How much should I discount the price compared to a similar vehicle with
- more normal (24K) mileage? (This vehicle also has the questionable
- overdrive transmission; see my earlier posting).
-
- Also, I get a modest 'tramp' (sharp vibration) at about 40 mph. It might
- be just a tire that needs balancing, but it feels too sharp for that. It's
- like someone was tapping on the floor with a hammer -- bapbapbap.
-
- Advise away.
