- I am still looking for a SUV. I've narrowed it down to a battle between
- the new Isuzu Trooper and the new Jeep Grand Cherokee. As someone pointed
- out, the Jeep's having the spare tire inside is a point against it, though
- the rear seats fold flat wrt the trunk floor whereas on the Isuzu, the seats,
- when folded, stick up above the floor. On the test drive, the back seat
- passenger felt more uncomfortable than in the Trooper over a rough road
- probably because of Jeep's use of an inline 6 (vs. a V6) -- it moves
- the passenger compartment back, and the back seat is closer to the rear
- axle. That's another point against the Jeep. On its plus side, the ride
- is pretty controlled; not too much body lean, reasonably sharp turn in,
- and, from the driver's seat, insulation from road chatter; the brakes
- seem quite capable, and it's cheaper than a loaded Trooper.
-
- As for the Trooper, it's much heavier for the same power, so it's a bit
- slower. The ride is ok, although the feel is that it's less nimble, and
- the seating position makes you feel too high off the road, compared to
- the Jeep. One needs to get the LS (i.e. more expensive) model to get the
- 190hp engine (the 15hp more than the base engine seems to make a difference;
- maybe the higher output one also has higher torque) and even then, the
- 4-wheel anti-lock is extra. One other big difference is that the Isuzu
- does not have shift-on-the-fly to 4wd, and so my big question is:
-
- How important and/or useful is it to have shift-on-the-fly 4wd? Is it
- really inconvenient to have to stop? If you're already in marginal
- conditions, will stopping get you in trouble? I don't actually plan
- to do the Baja race, but will be light off-roading.
