- I am considering purchasing one of three cars: a Porsche 914, a VW
- Karmann Ghia convertible, or a VW superbeetle convertible, and I'd
- like some more information about them.
-
- I am familiar with volkswagens in general, although not the
- convertible kinds specifically. I know next to nothing about
- real-world experience with 914's or ghias except what I can
- extrapolate from vw's, although I read a haynes repair manual on the
- 914.
-
- Mostly I am interested in maintainability. Since none of these cars
- have been made for awhile (except Mexican and Brazilian bugs), real
- amounts of maintenance will be required. Many more vw's were made
- than either of the others, so parts cost and availability is an issue.
- I prefer to do some of my own maintenance to cut down on mechanics
- costs, but I have no idea how easy the 914 or ghia is to work on. I
- remember the 1800 dual-carb in my bus was a real pain, but that had
- more to do with the egr that had been partially removed and the two
- carbs. If anybody has lived with several of these cars over the
- years, please speak up.
-
- I am also interested in comparisons of the various model years;
- without any more information I assume later means better, since there
- has been more time to fix problems. But complexity goes up too, which
- I don't think is a particularly good thing.
-
- Engine-swapping seems to be going on full-bore, especially for the
- porsche. Will any engine fit in any car? I suppose it depends on the
- engine the car was originally sold with. What goes with what? What
- about the 6-cylinder porsche engines they used for the 914S and 914/6
- (Are these the same models with slightly different names?), and the
- other porsche engines? Does engine-swapping tend to unbalance the
- car, or does space limit the added poundage so it's not a problem?
-
- I would expect the 6-cylinders to be beefier and somewhat more complex
- versions of the good-ole vw engines. How true is this? Would I need
- a new set of expensive tools and a degree from Porsche to work on
- them?
-
- The Ghia seems very similar to the 914 from a structural viewpoint.
- How much of the above information on 914's could apply to them? I
- know nothing about the various model years of Ghias. Can somebody
- give me a rundown?
-
- In the Bay Area, they all seem to cost about the same amount -- $4000
- for a good-condition model. Is this true across the country?
-
- Pointers to more information would be much appreciated. There are
- undoubtedly many shops that specialize in these issues. Any
- suggestions? Any good Bay Area shops (pref. South Bay)?
-
- Please mail me directly, as our netnews backlog is kept short here and
- I don't want to have to poll the list continually. I will be happy to
- summarize for interested parties or the net if desired.
