- I have a 1988 Honda Civic for which I bought an extended 5-year warranty. I
- haven't needed it (at least not so far). The only things I've had to have
- done on my car is replace the tires and brakes (both normal wear & tear). My
- extended warranty is through a company called General Warranty, Inc. They
- require "scheduled" maintenance every 7500 miles or 7.5 months, which is quite
- a bit more frequently than Honda requires and also quite expensive -- the first
- one (4 years ago) cost $60, and each one after that has cost about $50 more
- than the previous. I just recently called about the 60,000 mile service, and it
- costs $275 here. (BTW, I only have 40,000 miles on my car, but because of the
- "miles/months" provision, I'm due for the 60,00mi/60mo service already). And if
- I miss any of these required maintenances, or if I'm ever in an accident, my
- warranty is void.
-
- There are too many stipulations and requirements in most extended warranties
- to make them worth it. Having read the document in fine detail, I can guess
- that I'd have a hard time collecting on anything if I ever needed to.
-
- Something they'll try to sell you on is rental car coverage (if your car is
- being fixed under warranty, you get a free rental car for as long as it takes
- to fix). What they don't tell you is that you don't get covereage until they
- determine that the problem is a warranty-covered repair. I know -- I've been
- through this. I had a small repair done for which I had to leave my car at the
- dealer overnight. I had to rent a car to get home & to work the next day.
- The next day they called and said the repair was not covered by the warranty.
-
- I would not buy the extended warranty again (at least not for a Honda). If
- the dealer tries to hard-sell it to you (and you don't want it), use the line
- I've heard in this newsgroup a few times:
-
- "The whole reason I'm buying a Honda is for its reliability. If you think I
- need the extended warranty so badly, you must know something I don't. Thanks
- for the info. Think I'll go buy a Toyota".
-
- That should shut them up.
