- I had an interesting conversation with a CHP officer recently that
- yielded some good (hopefully reliable) information. Yes the CHP is
- branching out, and we can expect to continue to see different color
- combinations. Although these new colors are "stealthier", I was told
- that cars used for traffic enforcement will continue to have door
- stickers by law. Did the white/white or silver cars you saw have the big
- decals on the doors? Also, the silver (also gold) cruisers now being
- used in the Silicon Valley area are specifically assigned to commercial
- (read 18 wheeler) enforcement, and shouldn't mess with you in a passenger
- car unless your being really stupid.
-
- Regarding radar, it has been a CHP policy (not law) to not use radar
- on freeways. A freeway being defined as a limited access highway with
- only on-ramps and off-ramps and no cross traffic. Highways with cross
- traffic are still game, and radar is being used more often on these.
- Also, since the freeway restriction is only a matter of policy, this
- could change at any time.
-
- Silicon valley can expect to see more Mustangs and Crown Vics as CHP
- replacements. When I asked why I wasn't seeing Taurus SHOs, I was
- told that Ford would not offer the same warranty for police equipped
- SHOs as for the other vehicles. The standard retirement interval is
- 80,0000 miles, and the warranty on the Crown Vic and Mustang have
- matched this (this is a special warranty for law enforcement agencies).
- I was also told that there was a police package V-6 that would carry
- the accustomed warranty in a non-SHO Taurus. I had trouble believing
- that it would "get up and dance" sufficiently for the CHP.
