- Thanks for all the replies and suggestions. A while ago I posted
- a note about my reception of radio freqency interference through
- the rear and center speakers of my new surround sound stereo (Sony
- STR-GX67ES). Here is what I have found out.
-
- From what I can tell, the most recommended and most thorough solution
- (besides eliminating the interfering person) is to purchase 2 .01 mf
- 600volt disc ceramic capacitors and a 5/16" diameter 4 1/2" length
- ferrite rod. Wrap the speaker wire (which should be RG-58/U or RG-59/U)
- around the ferrite rod about 20 times and rubber cement the wire to the
- ferrite rod so it doesn't unwravel. Before and after the ferrite rod,
- solder a capacitor across the positive and negative lead. Don't leave
- more than an inch or two of speaker wire after the capacitor before
- connecting to your receiver. This is assuming your speaker wire is picking
- up the signal, if it's your amp, then there is little you can do without
- going in and doing some modification.
-
- I called the FCC to complaing and received a letter in the mail. An
- excerpt follows (I don't have the original in front of me but this is close):
-
- "We encourage the you to contact the manufacturer... Due to recent budget
- cutbacks, the FCC no longer pursues individual cases of radio interference
- to home appliances. The FCC is relegated to a provider of self-help
- information... The FCC is working with manufacturers on legislation that
- will increase the standards for home stereo equipment. We believe your tax
- dollars are better spent this way."
-
- Needless to say this really pissed me off.
-
- So, I've been deeling with Sony to try and get them to fix the problem.
- After about a week of dealing with the customer service center (800-222-SONY),
- they suggested I take it to the Sony Customer Service Center in San Jose.
- When I got there, they said they would put in an "environmental kit" which
- should solve the problem. Yesterday I went to pick it up and the repairman's
- note said, "part not available." The mechanical drawing that shows how to put
- the damn thing together had an extra shield for the amplifier and next to it was
- not a part number but the words, "not available." Sony's explanation is that
- the part is either no longer manufactured or will be manufactured in the
- future and therefore has no part number yet. Sony doesn't seem very confident
- that they will be able to fix the problem.
-
- I just love this. The FCC says to go bug the manufacturer. The manufacturer
- says that it's not his problem and that they (direct quote) "can't reproduce
- this problem in the lab and therefore have no recommendation for a solution."
- Meanwhile, I get this CB mega-jerk anytime I listen to anything in surround
- mode.
