  25. Of course the original author may have been making a tounge-in-cheek comment,
  26. then again he might not. In any case, he is largely correct. At the time
  27. of the 78/45/LP the old technology of 3-5 minute direct-to-disk uncompressed
  28. recording was repaced by magnetic tape. To this day, magnetic tape mastering
  29. is considered to be inferior to direct-to-disk.

  31. I have many 78 rpm disks that are astoundingly life-like in precense
  32. despite having slightly more surface noise (much less than you'd think)
  33. than a good LP and a restricted frequency response. How many years did
  34. it take for the LP to surpass 78rpm sonics? 5-10 years it seems. And
  35. then they gave us stereo and a host of other problems, record wear -
  36. inner groove distortion, etc. yet the old mono records recorded with
  37. a single microphone were soon superseeded by mixdowns from stereo masters.
  38. Stereo FM is a kludge and disaster compared to mono FM. Fm was supposed
  39. to be staticless - cheap stereo FM sure isn't.

  41. Digital recording has its pro and con as well. Early digital recordings
  42. are harsh. How many years did it take for things to get better? 10?
  43. How many digitally remastered analog LP's were issured before the final
  44. demise of the LP? the worst of both worlds, IMHO?

  46. The CD is technically better than the 78. But artistically, it isn't
  47. as revolutionary as you'd suggest? Have you listened?
