- In response to several recent postings about Pro-logic setups and center
- channels:
-
- I have had my Pro-logic setup for about 3 years now and have tried a
- number of configurations. Here's some random thoughts:
-
- - balance the power available to all channels. This is important because
- the balancing controls in the processor only have so much range. The
- first amp I used for the center channel was 60% (rated) smaller than
- the mains and surround amps. I couldn't get the channels to balance
- in such a way as to allow me to go in and out of pro-logic mode without
- resetting all the levels (TV, stereo, VCR,...).
-
- - use a shielded speaker(s) for the center channel so that it can be placed
- as close to the tv as possible.
-
- - use as few stages before the pro-logic processor as possible. This helps
- to get the best decoding.
-
- - if you use an active subwoofer filter, use it on the front (main) stereo
- channel. Remember the center channel is rolled off at 100Hz. Don't use
- the filter before the pro-logic processor (see previous note).
-
- - I tried a setup with 3 stereo amps; 1 for mains, 1 for surrounds, and
- 1 split between center and subwoofer. This works fine except I now feel
- that it is best to use 2 subwoofers and keep the subwoofer signals in
- stereo. Despite the theory, I am convinced I hear imaging in the subs
- (maybe because I've been a bass player for almost 30 years!).
-
- BTW: I use a Carver CT-17 for the pro-logic processor and ADCOM amps. After
- trying several combinations I have settled on Magnaplanners for speakers.
- They really make nice mains speakers due to the wide spacial imaging and
- crisp sound. They can really use subwoofers though.
-
- My setup is a little wierd because my wife insists on not having to turn
- on the stereo to watch TV or even to use the VCR so I now use a stereo
- amp/speakers right at the TV/VCR. One input to that amp comes from the
- VCR and the other comes (mono) from the center channel out on the pro-logic
- processor. The VCR also directly feeds the pro-logic processor input. This
- requires some buffering to keep the feeds isolated (AD712 opamps of course!).
