- Most large retail outlets use the "odd" numbers in a functional way. Example:
- 9 = Normal price
- 8 = Advertized special
- 7 = Unadvertized special
- 6 = Floor sample reduced price
- 5 = Non-returnable closeout price
- The book you normally buy for $4.99 might go on a special sale for $3.48 if
- there's an ad, or for $3.47 if it's just marked down on the shelves. If you
- try to return a VCR that you bought for $149.95, the receipt shows that you
- made the purchase on a non-refundable basis.
