- Kathleen Jamieson became Dean at Annenberg about two years ago. She has re-
- focused the school to be oriented more towards news-reporting, like most other
- Schools of Communication. An unfortunate side-effect has been the shutting-down
- of the Annenberg Script archive, which was a repository of original scripts
- from television shows from the '60s, '70s and '80s (our Television Heritage!).
- Annenberg floats on a pool of cash that was given it by the eponymous founder
- of TV Guide. He also decreed that TV Guide should give Penn the scripts it
- uses to write capsule reviews (and you thought they got those blurbs from the
- producers -- talk about misplaced journalistic integrity!). These, then, were
- the actual show scripts that might have been used by such TV legends as
- Farah Fawcett, Don Knotts, and Pam Dawber! (No Star Hustler scripts, as far
- as I know -- sorry Jack Dorkheimer fans!). I saw a scripts from "The Dukes of
- Hazzard." The first page was the cast of characters. The second page was
- the cast of vehicles -- longer than the first! I also saw the script from
- the episode of CPO Sharkey (Don Rickles' series) entitled "Punk Rock Sharkey".
- The show featured a performance by The Dickies, and the script included the
- song lyrics (as though the Dickies would work from it. Odd).
-
- This ramble is not meant to disparage Dr. Jamieson's fine work in journalism.
- It's just meant to point out one of the costs associated with it.
