  21. article appared. Further follow-ups are directed to misc.misc, which
  22. is the least irrelevant of these groups.

  24. I just wanted to point out to everybody that actually going through
  25. with this is a bad idea. For several reasons.

  27. 1. You are not likely even to get your $10 back.

  29. Money does not appear out of thin air. Like a lottery a few people
  30. earns a lot of bucks and a lot of people lose a few bucks. Unlike a
  31. lottery it is pretty easy to guess who wins and who loses. The
  32. person(s) starting the chain wins, as does the first few levels after
  33. that. The rest loses. This is assuming, of course, that everybody stays
  34. honest.

  36. You see, if the first person is to earn $35000 this means 3500 other
  37. people has to pay $10. For those 3500 people to get $35000 each
  38. another ten million people has to join. For the next level every
  39. single human being on Earth has to join... seven times.

  41. By the time this message reaches USENET I would guess you are pretty
  42. late in the chain.

  44. 2. The name 'Dave Rhoades' does not appear on the list!

  46. This means that 'Dave' has broken his own rules... In fact, my guess
  47. is that 'Dave Rhoades' doesn't exist or at least hasn't written this
  48. article. (Did I mention that the article is a rather obvious forgery?)
  49. My guess is also that the real author is number five on the list, i.e.
  50. the person who is likely to earn the most from this caper.

  52. 3. This is commersial use of the USENET, which isn't quite legal.

  54. It least some of the networks where USENET travels is explicitly
  55. non-commercial. E.g. the North-American internet backbone NSFNET. I'm
  56. not sure about the legel aspects of this, but I believe the forger has
  57. a ton of bricks waiting to come down on him if he can be traced down.

  59. 4. This isn't the kind of articles I want to spend my day wading through.

  61. This is of course just my humble opinion, but I think a lot of people
  62. would agree that this is not why they are reading news.
