- True, but frequently the surnames are indicative of the person's ethnic
- descent, so you have to be careful when using such names. For example,
- a person with a western surname in India is either an Anglo-Indian or
- Goanese Christian. Hindus and Muslims don't use western surnames.
- Anglo-Indians tend to have British surnames, Goanese Christians tend
- to have Portugese surnames. Then there are also Christians from Kerala
- some of whome have surnames such as Abraham, Joseph etc. and others who
- don't. All these groups have different customs, etc. So if your
- character has an Anglo-Indian name, they should be recognizably
- Anglo-Indian in behaviour as well.
-
- Of course, none of the above may matter if you are writing fiction for
- the western market.
