-
-
- ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
-
- It's time to start making plans for attending and/or presenting a paper at the
- 40th Society for Technical Communication (STC) Annual Conference to be held
- June 6-9, 1993, at the Loews Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, USA.
- Post-Conference Workshops will be held on June 10, 1993.
-
- The STC Annual Conference (formerly called the International Technical
- Communication Conference or ITCC) is the world's largest annual conference
- covering technical writing, editing, illustrating, and related issues. With
- the theme COMMUNICATION ROUNDUP, some 2,500 technical communicators from
- around the world are expected to attend this professional forum in Dallas to
- exchange the latest in technical communication information. Also featured is
- an exposition presenting tools and services designed for the technical
- communication professional. Exhibitors will include: desktop and electronic
- publishing tools, online documentation tools, training firms, translations
- tools, books and periodicals, and consulting firms.
-
- STC's Annual Conference is the place to learn about trends and technologies in
- technical communication. Participate in technical communication's premier
- event by sharing your knowledge and experience.
-
-
- ABOUT STC
-
- The Society for Technical Communication (STC) is the largest and fastest growing
- professional non-profit organization devoted to the advancement of the theory
- and practice of technical communication. The international STC headquarters in
- Arlington, Virginia, provides leadership and direction for more than 15,000
- members of 125 worldwide chapters. Members include: writers and editors,
- graphic artists, video and audiovisual specialists, documentation managers and
- supervisors, educators and students, and freelance writers and consultants.
-
-
- WHO SHOULD SUBMIT PAPERS AND/OR ATTEND?
-
- Technical writers, editors, illustrators, managers, consultants, contractors,
- educators, students, and researchers in the technical communication field.
-
-
- CONFERENCE STEMS
-
- The 40th STC Annual Conference offers you the opportunity to participate in
- any of the six conference stems (topic areas): Writing and Editing; Visual
- Communication; Research and Technology; Education, Training, and Professional
- Development; Management; and STC Chapter Development. The following offers a
- brief explanation about each stem.
-
- Writing and Editing:
- Being solely a writer or an editor may no longer be enough; demands on the
- technical communicator are increasing. Among other issues, possible topics
- include: expectations of today's technical communicator; tomorrow's technical
- communicator--language strength versus technical strength; and the relative
- value of usability testing. Stem Manager: Paula Berger, Solutions, Inc.
-
- Visual Communication:
- More and more we find ourselves involved in the visual aspects of technical
- communication, searching for the best methods to present our message. Among
- other issues, possible topics include: how to become more "visually"
- conscious; and whether technical communicators are encroaching upon the
- territory formerly reserved for the technical illustrator or graphic artist.
- Stem Manager: Beth Tanner, Tanner Communications.
-
- Management:
- With increasing demands on technical communicators, there are related demands
- on management; not all these demands are easily resolved. Among other issues,
- possible topics include: managing change; managing personnel and new equipment;
- delegating responsibilities; management as a career move; and independent
- consulting. Stem Manager: Jerilynne Sander, Simply Written.
-
- Research and Technology:
- Today's technology is the result of yesterday's research, and so it will be in
- the years ahead. Among other issues, possible topics include: the role of
- research in improving reader and user comprehension; and how to keep pace with
- changing technology. Stem Manager: Ed See, IBM Corporation.
-
- Education, Training, and Professional Development:
- From year to year, the role of the technical communicator may change, but the
- need for continuing education and specialized training will always play a major
- part in our professional development. Among other issues, possible topics
- include: post-collegiate training, mentoring, ethics, and keeping pace with
- tomorrow's needs. Stem Manager: Lory Hawkes, DeVry Institute.
-
- Chapter Development:
- We know that the STC chapter is the basic building block of our Society, but
- not all chapters have the same problems and situations. Among other issues,
- possible topics include: how to create and maintain chapters; what makes
- chapters successful; and what is the chapter's role in individual member's
- professional development. Stem Manager: Judith Glick-Smith, Integrated
- Documentation.

- PRESENTATION TYPES
-
- There are seven presentation formats: Demonstration, Discussion, Panel, Paper,
- Progression, Conference Workshop, and Post-Conference Workshop.
-
- Requirements for a Proposal (use the attached application form):
-
- * Information about the presenters (names, addresses, etc.)
- * The title and a 30-word description for the Conference Program.
- * Your choice of stem and presentation format.
- * Your choice of audiovisual equipment needed for the presentation.
- * Additional requirements depending on the presentation format as listed
- below (include three copies of all required additional material).
-
- Demonstration:
- In a demonstration, you instruct participants and provide new information on a
- selected topic. However, a demonstration has no "hands-on" exercises for the
- audience; you perform the "hands-on" portions of your presentation. (The
- demonstration session is an alternative to a traditional workshop.) Audience
- size varies from 20 to more than 200 people.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Demonstration Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * Specific objectives that participants will be able to perform after
- attending the demonstration.
- * Specific activities that you will perform that teach specific skills to
- participants. Include at lease one activity for each objective.
- * A detailed Demonstration plan that alternates between teaching and
- interaction with your audience.
- * A draft of a 500- to 1,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is optional.)
-
- Discussion:
- I a discussion session, all participants address a carefully selected subject
- in an open exchange among other experts and the audience. Generally, the
- person who proposes the discussion acts as the moderator. Each expert has
- several minutes at the beginning and end of the session to summarize his or
- her thoughts. (The exact amount of time available to each expert depends on
- the number of discussion participants.) Audience size varies from 20 to more
- than 200 people. Note: All experts must agree to appear before you propose
- the discussion.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Discussion Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * A detailed Discussion plan that lists the topics to be covered, including
- the main points and supporting facts and examples. About one-half of the
- time in any subject area should be for audience participation.
- * A draft of a 500- to 1,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is optional.)
-
- Panel:
- As a Panelist is a 90-minute, in-depth discussion on a selected subject,
- usually involving three or more "panelists" and led by a moderator. Generally,
- the person who proposes the panel acts as the moderator. Audience size varies
- from 20 to more than 200 people. Note: All panelists must agree to appear
- before you propose the panel.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Panel Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * A detailed presentation plan that lists the topics to be covered, including
- the main points and supporting facts and examples. About one-half of the
- time in any subject area should be for audience participation.
- * A draft of a 500- to 1,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is optional.)
-
- Paper:
- The paper, based on a topic of your choice, is expanded upon in person at the
- conference, and later published in the Conference Proceedings. Your
- presentation normally allows you 20 minutes to speak and additional time at
- the end of the session to field questions from the audience. Generall, the
- stem manager groups two or more individual papers on related subjects into a
- single session and assigns a moderator. Audience size varies from 20 to more
- than 200 people.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Paper Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * A draft of the 500- to 3,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is required. You must present if you want
- to publish.)
-
- Progression:
- A progression session is a series of 8 to 15 roundtable discussions in which
- you participate as a discussion leader. The session begins with a brief
- introduction by the event coordinator.
-
- You will be one of 8 to 15 presenters in the Progressions room.
- Each of three rounds in the Progression
- session consists of 5 minutes of presentation followed by 15 minutes of open
- discussion among 10 or fewer participants. In all, there are three rounds in
- a Progressions session; therefore, you will give your presentation three times
- to three different groups of participants. Each of three rounds in the
- progression session consists of 5 minutes of presentation followed by 15
- minutes of open discussion among 10 or fewer participants.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Progression Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * A detailed presentation plan that lists the topics to be covered, including
- the main points and supporting facts and examples. Include at least 10
- prepated questions to facilitate discussion after your formal presentation.
- * A draft of a 500- to 1,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is optional.)
-
- Conference Workshop:
- In a workshop session, you instruct other participants and provide new
- information on a selected topic. Ideally, one-third of the 90-minute workshop
- is devoted to "hands-on" demonstrations or exercises for all attendees.
- Tickets are required for admission, and enrollment is usually limited to
- between 50 and 120 people.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Conference Workshop Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * Specific objectives that participants will be able to perform after
- attending the workshop.
- * Specific activities that provide participants to practice skills. (Include
- at lease one activity for each objective.)
- * A detailed Workshop plan that alternates between teaching and interaction
- with your audience. Remember, one-third of the workshop must be devoted to
- "hands-on" demonstrations or exercises.
- * A draft of a 500- to 1,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is optional.)
-
- Post-Conference Workshop:
- In the post-conference workshops, which are held the day after the conference,
- you instruct other participants and provide new information on a selected topic.
- Ideally, one-third of the workshop is devoted to "hands-on" demonstrations or
- exercises for all attendees. A post-conference workshop lasts either on-half
- day or a full day. Attendees register separately and pay an extra fee. They
- will be held June 10, 1993.
-
- Additional Requirements for a Post-Conference Workshop Proposal
- (attach to application form):
-
- * Specific objectives that participants will be able to perform after
- attending the workshop.
- * Specific activities that provide participants to practice skills. (Include
- at lease one activity for each objective.)
- * A detailed Workshop plan that alternates between teaching and interaction
- with your audience. Remember, one-third of the workshop must be devoted to
- "hands-on" demonstrations or exercises.
- * A draft of a 500- to 1,000-word paper that you want to publish in the
- Conference Proceedings. (Paper is optional.)
