You knew it had to happen. Pat Ayatollah Robertson had to open mouth and insert foot on the present presidential campaign. Here's an item from the 7-21-92 USA TODAY, submitted for your approval:
EVANGELISTS BLAST CLINTON SPEECH Two well known-evangelists, both supporters of Republican issues, say Democrat Bill Clinton misquoted the Bible in his acceptance speech last week. Clinton, a Southern Baptist, cited several Biblical passages in his speech, including use of a "new covenant" as his campaign theme.
TV evangelist and 1988 GOP presidential candidate Pat Robertson charged Clinton only partially quoted Biblical passages and failed to mention their full religious contexts.
Robertson, speaking on his 700 CLUB show (carried on cable and 377 TV stations) noted that Clinton's call for a "new covenant" with voters-- mentioned 10 times in last week's speech-- was a term used by Jesus as he poured wine, representing his blood, for apostles at the Last Supper.
"If it isn't blasphemous, it certainly borders on it," said Robertson, who cited Clinton's prochoice stance on abortion. "This to me, is extremely dangerous...Don't come up with pseudo-Christianity to mask what you're doing."
And Jerry Falwell, who plans to attend the GOP convention in Houston next month, released a statement saying "misquoting and manipulating the Holy Scripture for political purposes should be offensive to millions of Americans...It is certainly a more significant error than the much publicized misspelling of potato."
Now, does Pat have a copyright on the words "new covenant"? And, what was that about pseudo-Christianity? I would think that Pat has a little more of a corner on THAT one.
