- Hi Doug! I agree that it was not necessary to mention that I am black.
- I don't think mentioning it, however, is as bad as you say. A large
- percentage of Baltimore's population is black and it may be of interest
- to them as reads to know that I am too. Our society has not yet
- progressed to the stage where we can be color blind in how we treat
- issues. Jernigan does not acknowledge this, but I think there are
- issues at the intersection of being blind and black, blind and female,
- blind and gay, etc. Therefore, an organization truly concerned with
- the betterment of blind people should strive for representation among
- diverse constituencies of blind people, both within its membership and
- leadership. The fact that the NFB makes almost no effort to do that is
- significant.

- Amy Cuningham also described the patriarchial culture at NFB
- headquarters. It may not be related to blindness per se, but I think a
- lot of women will be glad to be informed of this.
