- I've been using an external Dallas Fax v.32bis v.42bis model
- 14.4E Pro Plus fax/modem for about two weeks. I use it only to
- connect to school. (Ever since I've been able to access usenet,
- I stopped calling BBSes.) I can connect to the v.32bis, 2400
- MNP, and 2400 lines. In order to connect to the 2400 bps lines,
- I have to instruct the modem to connect at 2400 bps. In order to
- connect to the non-MNP line, I have to instruct the modem not to
- negotiate compression.
-
- I suspect that the difficulty is due to the modem pools at school
- because someone else (with a different brand modem) reported
- having the same problems.
-
- I have not tried the fax part of the fax/modem.
-
- The modem came in a cheap black plastic housing and the LEDs on
- the circuit board were not properly aligned with the clear
- windows of the housing. It used the Rockwell chipset. The LEDs
- are undocumented. They are labelled OH, CI, TR, TX, RX, SD, AA,
- TM.
-
- Once, I turned the modem on and none of the LEDs lit up. Normally
- CI lights up. After I've made my call, TM flashes. One of the
- reasons why I ordered an external was because of the extra
- information I get from the LEDs. The LEDs on this modem tell me
- zilch. I assume OH, TR, TX, RX, and AA mean the same things as
- on other modems. I assume SD means Carrier Detect.
-
- The booklet that comes with it has formatting and spelling
- errors. The AT commands Ln and Mn (and therefore possibly
- others) are not described. The Ln and Mn commands work and
- they're listed, but they're not described.
-
- The 9v power supply that comes with it gets pretty warm.
-
- Perhaps if I had been willing to spend more money I would have
- gotten a modem with a nicer housing, LEDs that made sense, and
- error-free documentation. But I'm a cheapskate. The modem
- works. Throughput during text transfers is about 1900 cps. The
- school's DTE speed is 19200 bps. If the school's DTE speed were
- higher, the throughput would probably be higher too.
-
- When talking about v.32bis v.42bis, one often hears "up to 57.6
- kbps." This is only for very compressible text like ASCII art
- which contain tons of spaces. It is very rare that the "up-to"
- speed of 57.6 kbps is achieved.
