- No, you want to require all the rest of the world to pay for any changes the
- manufacturers have to make to their labels. Even if it's just a minor label
- change it will still require some cost to the manufacturer to change it. That
- cost will then be passed on the the consumer.
-
- It's also not just the labling cost. It's also a regulation cost. What if
- they use an ingredient from another supplier? Do they have to label it then?
- If so, since nothing about MSG is proven to be special, you're going to have
- some very long labels.
-
- What if I get enough of my friends together and say "we think xxx gives us
- migrane headaches and therefore should always be labeled on products." Should
- all manufacturers be required to do so?
-
- The fact is that there are some people who imagine this type of thing (I don't
- mean MSG allergies specifically). Even some people who imagine themselves into
- the hospital. If there is no objective evidence that a significant percentage
- of the population (and I won't attempt to define what that is) is affected by
- it, then manufacturers should not be required to label it.
-
- It sounds like you believe that MSG causes you to get sick (minor or major). I
- believe you - my wife has the same type of reaction. However, the MSG
- possibility has been so widely publicised (whether it's true or not), that many
- people are aware of it.
-
- The solution is easy. If you see a package which has MSG on it, don't buy it.
- If you buy something which makes you feel sick, don't buy it again. If the
- problems didn't happen until weeks after you ate the MSG this would be
- difficult. However, the symptoms usually show up before the next meal. It's
- not that hard to figure out what caused you to get sick. I'm sure you've heard:
-
- "Doctor, it hurts when I do this"
- "Then don't do it"
