- Normally copper pipes are joined with lead/tin solder. This has a
- melting point in the range of 700 degrees (the exact point varies
- with the percentage of lead). Possibly you are seeing a layer of the
- flux used during the soldering process. Clean one of these joints
- with alcohol, mineral spirits (paint thinner), or lighter fluid.
- Then take a knife, file, or sandpaper and clean the joint a little
- to remove oxidation. You *should* see bright copper pieces with a
- thin silvery line between them. That's the solder. You will almost
- certainly find that everything is OK under some sort of crud.

- If, in fact, the jointing material *is* melting, then it's not solder.
- In that case, some clown may have put it together with one of the
- plastic "lead" compounds. If that's the case, you may have a good
- legal case against the builder (if you can find him).
