- MALNOURISHMENT
- The UN Food and Agriculture Organization claims in a report
- released today that the proportion of malnourished in the world has
- dropped to 20% from 36% in 1971. This brings the number down from
- 941 million to 786 million people.
-
- For the first time, the estimations include the populations of
- China, North Korea and Vietnam. According to the report, this
- inclusion decisively changes the figures since the one billion
- Chinese are, the FAO says, relatively well nourished.
-
- But the FAO director general says he is still pre-occupied by the
- situation in Africa, which he categorized as "distressing." The
- number of malnourished went from 101 million to 168 million people.
