  25. VENEZUELA: Violations increase as unrest grows

  27. Human rights violations are reportedly on the increase in Venezuela,
  28. as social unrest continues to grow. In May an AI delegation visited
  29. Caracas and Valencia to research reported human rights violations by
  30. the security forces in the wake of the attempted coup of 4 February
  31. and during anti-government demonstrations in March and April. The
  32. delegates met human rights monitors, interviewed victims of human
  33. rights violations and held a meeting with Luis Maria Olaso, the head
  34. of the Human Rights Directorate of the Attorney General's Office.

  36. The delegation collected information about serious human rights
  37. violations, including evidence of at least seven extrajudicial executions
  38. of soldiers and civilians suspected of participating in the attempted
  39. coup, killings by the security forces during anti-govermment demonstrations,
  40. and the continuing use of torture and ill-treatment by the police against
  41. crinimal defendants. Those responsible for human rights violations
  42. in Venezuela have seldom been brought to justice.
