- Title: PERU: NEW GUERRILLA OFFENSIVE LEAVES 13 DEAD AND OVER 100 WOUNDED
-
- lima, jul 17 (ips) -- the 'sendero luminoso' guerrilla group has
- renewed its offensive in lima, leaving 13 people dead and 100
- wounded in nine separate actions, including a car bomb attack.
-
- the car bomb, containing 150 kilogrammes of dynamite, was
- detonated on thursday night, just 40 minutes before the vehicular
- curfew went into effect.
-
- the explosion destroyed three apartment buildings and several
- businesses in the miraflores district.
-
- the car bombing was preceded by seven attacks with automatic
- arms and rockets against police barracks and businesses in
- various parts of this capital city.
-
- fourteen people, mainly policemen and area residents, were
- wounded in an attack against the police station of the city's el
- salvador district, which occured at 05:40 (local time) on friday
- morning, just 40 minutes after the curfew was lifted.
-
- the attack also damaged the building, which was still being
- rebuilt from a may bombing attack.
-
- the car bomb detonated in the miraflores district on thursday
- was the first such attack since the jun. 5 car bombing of tv
- station 'channel 2', which killed four civilians.
-
- the attack against channel 2 was the twelfth car bombing
- action by the guerrilla group, which usually chooses police and
- army installations as targets.
-
- the government imposed the partial curfew in may, when sendero
- luminoso initiated a new wave of attacks. the curfew prohibits
- all unauthorised vehicular traffic between 22:00 and 05:00.
-
- sendero luminoso began its civil war against the peruvian
- government in 1980. originally based in the countryside, the
- guerrilla group has been operating increasingly in lima during
- the past two years. so far, the war has cost some 26,000 lives.
-
- nevertheless, peru's anti-insurgency police have made
- important gains, including the recent capture of a logistical
- base in central lima used for propaganda and the training of new
- recruits.
-
- documents seized at the base stated that the attack against
- channel 2 was the culmination of a military phase entitled
- ''towards strategic equilibrium.'' (more/ips)

-
-
- peru: attacks (2)
-
- the document also outlined sendero luminoso plans to launch
- another major offensive during peru's independence day
- celebrations on jul. 28 and 29. the current series of attacks
- appears to be the start of this offensive.
