  27. buenos aires, jul 11 (ips) -- an argentinian parliamentarian has
  28. demanded an investigation into president carlos menem's alleged
  29. threats against those who organise and participate in street rallies
  30. to air their grievances.

  32. socialist deputy alfredo brazo has asked the country's judiciary
  33. to verify if menem's words ''constitute an offence or public
  34. intimidation''.

  36. on friday, argentina's daily newspapers quoted menem who warned
  37. against a repeat of the 'plaza de mayo' incident early this month
  38. where parents, teachers and students protested against a law
  39. establishing compensation for former political prisoners of the past
  40. military dictatorship.

  42. menem had made the statements in a press conference this week in
  43. argentina's northern city of tucuman, where he presided over the
  44. country's 176th celebration of independence.

  46. in tucuman, menem said protests organised by teachers ''are
  47. breeding ground for infiltration by subversives'' and called on
  48. parents to prevent their children from joining such rallies.

  50. he said some participants in the 'plaza de mayor' rally had
  51. ''contacts'' with fugitive rebel enrique gorriaran, who was
  52. allegedly responsible for the assassination in paraguay
  53. of former nicaraguan dictator anastasio somoza.

  56. to think calmly'' about people's protests after he became the object
  57. of school strikes and massive protest demonstrations in tucuman and
  58. jujuy province along the argentina-bolivia border.

  61. declarations. but his colleague, defence minister erman conzalez,
  62. confirmed the participation of ''subversives'' in the rallies.

  65. luis manzano said the president's statements contained no threats
  66. and were made simply to ''call the people's attention''.
