  25. INDONESIA TO BUY LARGE PART OF FORMER EAST GERMAN NAVY

  27. Indonesia has been authorised to buy 39 warships from the
  28. stocks of the former East German armed forces, the Defence
  29. Ministry said yesterday. The deal, which will enhance
  30. Indonesia's ability to launch amphibious operations, comprises
  31. nine mine-sweepers, 14 landing craft and 16 fast patrol boats.

  33. Bonn authorised the contract because Indonesia is not
  34. considered to be an area of tension or combat, (the ministry
  35. spokesman) said.

  37. Indonesia is one of three dozen countries which have asked to
  38. buy parts of of the enormous arsenal left by the National
  39. People's Army when it was dissolved upon German unification in
  40. October 1990.

  42. Some of it, mainly chemical suits and detection gear, was sent
  43. to Germany's allies during the Gulf War, and part has been
  44. sold to Finland.

  48. Indonesia is to buy most of the warships owned by former East
  49. Germany. A spokesman said Indonesia would buy 39 of sixty
  50. warships. Negotiations on the price are still going on.
