- BALTIMORE WELFARE RIGHTS LEADER TARGETED BY POLITICAL FRAME-UP
-
- By Mike Brand
-
- BALTIMORE -- Annie Chambers is a long-time leader of the struggle
- in the welfare rights arena. She is a founding member of the
- Baltimore Welfare Rights Organization and the executive director
- of Operation Life, a self- help and advocacy group. Chambers has
- become a target and victim of the antics of the New Alliance
- Party (NAP) in its presidential electioneering. Most alarming is
- the cooperation it is getting from the local State's Attorney.
-
- The so-called independent political party persuaded the Baltimore
- State's Attorney to indict Ms. Chambers for the "theft" of its
- election petitions, even though these documents were not in her
- possession. Nor had they been. What actually occurred is that Ms.
- Morning Sunday, the state chair of the NAP, concluded that the
- NAP actually victimizes those it claims to represent and empower.
- Not wishing to help them do this, Morning Sunday kept the
- petitions.
-
- The only thing that Chambers is "guilty" of is having loudly,
- clearly and consistently denounced the New Alliance Party as a
- useless cult both publicly and to Morning Sunday. Yet, on June 9,
- in Baltimore District Court, a Judge Barbara Waxman found Annie
- guilty of theft and sentenced her to 30 days in jail. Morning
- Sunday got six months. At a resentencing hearing on June 30 the
- State's Attorney pointed to the "lack of remorse" of the
- defendants and urged a harsh sentence even though the petitions
- had been returned to the NAP. The courtroom was filled with
- supporters of Annie and of Morning Sunday. The sentences were
- suspended, but both defendants were placed on probation for one
- year and required to perform "community service."
-
- What "community service" would mean when these women already
- dedicate their time to their community was not made clear. In any
- case the verdict is being appealed. We cannot stand by while the
- Maryland judicial system takes the side of the New Alliance Party
- to attack fighters for the rights of the poor. Statements of
- support and contributions can be sent to Annie Chambers Defense
- Fund, 2206 Guilford Avenue, Baltimore, Maryland 21230.
