  25. Sen. Nancy Kassebaum appeared on MacNeil/Lehrer News Hour July 22. She has
  26. just returned from Somalia
  27.  
  28. She said:
  29. 1. The situation is desperate beyond anything we can imagine. Children are
  30. dying in silence, too weak to cry.

  32. 2. She thinks a UN peacekeeping force should be sent so that at least there
  33. is enough stability to get food to the starving.

  35. MacN/L showed video of skeletal children in refugee camps, in som cases with
  36. their mothers fallen dead in front of them. Heartbreaking scenes.

  38. Estimates are that 5000 people are dying each day.

  40. I called Kassebaum's office; her aide for Africa advised me to call the State
  41. Department to emphasize support for a UN peacekeeping force and continued
  42. humanitarian aide.  The number to call is 1-202-647-4000.
