- MALAYSIA
- The following comes from R. Australia:
-
- Studies in the area showed that children have high blood level of
- lead. There was an increase in miscarriages, perinatal deaths and
- leukemia. Dr. Jaabaland(?) from the Bokatnir(?) health clinic
- believed these were due to the activities of the Asian Rare Earth
- Plant.
-
- In 1989, he said, "Now we have three leukemia cases, one brain
- tumor and a host of miscarriages. Also a worker died in the
- factory, he was a very young worker, in his early 20's and there
- was no reason for him to die. Scientifically, it seems more than
- certain that the common denominator is the factory, and you cannot
- explain it otherwise."
-
- The final decision to close the plant was made after the Malaysian
- High Court judge had sifted through a massive amount of scientific,
- community and industry evidence on the case. He finally decided
- that Asian Rare Earth had contributed to elevated rates of
- radiation in the area of the plant and that these rates were
- dangerous.
-
- Nina Raman(?) was one of the lawyers who was involved in the case
- on behalf of the community. She spoke to R. Australia just after
- the decision to close the plant was made. She says the decision was
- greeted with great excitement by the community:
-
- "Women and men and children were crying... It has been about eight
- years that they have been waiting for this decision. Meanwhile,
- they have experienced a lot of hazards. The [Japanese-based
- multinational] company is now appealing to the Supreme Court. This
- is one more hurdle that we have to cross." (7/22)
