  21. July 1st was the last program on KALW-FM (San Francisco Bay Area)
  22. regularly hosted by Colin Edwards, who for several years on that
  23. station has given valuable information and commentary on the
  24. Israeli-Palestinian conflict.  I spoke with him over the phone
  25. today about what had happened at the station and I am posting this
  26. week's SF WEEKLY article about his firing.  The latest news is
  27. that the station manager Daniel del Solar, who made the decision
  28. to fire Edwards, has announced his resignation.  An investigation
  29. into Edwards firing has been called by school board member Tom
  30. Ammiano.  (The San Francisco school district runs the station.)

  33. worked for many years doing a great number of programs for the BBC
  34. and other broadcasting systems around the world, he had never been
  35. a BBC Middle East correspondent on staff.)

  47. Outspoken radio commentator Colin Edwards has been fired from
  48. KALW-FM after a months-long protest campaign by the Jewish
  49. Anti-Defamation League and the threat of a lawsuit by state
  50. Senator Quentin Kopp (I-S.F.)
  51.  
  52. Edwards announced on his last show July 1 that "the station has
  53. received many objections to my remarks from the Israeli Consulate
  54. General and Zionist organizations and individuals....It was not my
  55. decision to stop."
  56.  
  57. Edwards, an Oxford-educated, former BBC Middle East correspondent
  58. who now lives in Oakland, angered pro-Israeli listeners by voicing
  59. provocative opinions and airing dirty historical linen on his
  60. five-minute Wednesday morning program.  He spoke of how Yitzhak
  61. Shamir and David Ben Gurion colluded with the Nazis during World
  62. War II.  He described recent Israeli arms dealing with the
  63. government of South Africa.  And he talked about the present-day
  64. policy of "Israeli aggression" against Lebanon.

  66. He also outraged Kopp last November by an on-air reference to Kopp
  67. having served in the Israeli armed forces reserve during a trip
  68. the then-supervisor took to Israel in 1985.  Kopp threatened to
  69. sue, insisting he had merely been a non-military volunteer.

  71. The Kopp incident spurred the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) into
  72. action, Assistant Director Nancy Diner said last week.  "We
  73. started transcribing [Edwards'] shows to check for accuracy.  We
  74. wrote many protest letters to the station."

  76. Diner said that although it was not the ADL's intention to force
  77. Edwards off the air, one member of the group recently compiled a
  78. list of Edwards' alleged inaccuracies and took them to station
  79. manager Daniel del Solar in a personal effort to get Edwards
  80. fired.

  82. Del Solar denied the campaign against Edwards figured in his
  83. decision to end Edwards' four-year-old program.  "he was getting
  84. boring," del Solar said.

  86. But producer Alan Farley confirmed that outside pressure provoked
  87. the firing.  "Edwards' commentaries have drawn a lot of flack from
  88. the Israeli consulate and elsewhere in the Jewish community," he
  89. said.  "Our station manager finally got tired of dealing with
  90. it."

  92. Loyal listeners, upset at the decision, jammed the station
  93. switchboard with irate calls for half an hour after Edwards
  94. announced that the July 1 program was his last, Farley said.

  96. The San Francisco school district runs the station, and school
  97. board member Tom Ammiano called for an investigation into Edwards'
  98. firing.  "I am concerned about censorship," he said.  "It's not up
  99. to del Solar to decide these things.  The board sets policy.  We
  100. don't want to look as though we cave in to pressure, although we
  101. always do."
