- Well, I decided to take the plunge, and I got Emacs running on my PC7300
- (Unkx PC). This is the GNU Emacs distribution at OSU-CIS, not the one
- from The STORE!.
-
- So far, I like it. It's pretty good. But I do have a big problem.
-
- I am used to hitting the Backspace key (the one right next to the
- Reset/Break button) to erase mistakes. JOVE works this way, vi works
- this way. But, alas, EMACS doesn't. It does some sort of help menu
- thing. To correct mistakes, I must use the DEL key, which is extremely
- inconvenient (you have to hit shift while hitting ESC), and I'm not used
- to that anyway. I heard that there might be a way to "rebind" the
- functionality of keys, but I don't know enough of EMACS to figure out how
- to do it. I would like to rebind the "delete" function to the backspace
- key, and put the "help" function (or whatever function that backspace
- normally does) into the DEL key (shift-ESC). How do I do this?
-
- This brings me to another question. I know so pitifully little about
- EMACS, that I will probably be stumbling along for quite some time. Is
- there any books or manuals written on how to use EMACS? Are they
- available via FTP, or anon UUCP, or can someone send them to me through
- email? (Also, I cannot read TEX type files, because I do not have
- enough drive space for TEX :-( ) Also does emacs have a manpage? Can
- some kind soul send me that?
-
- Also, the Emacs distribution off osu-cis is extremely minimal -- it only
- contains the binary, some support programs, and a few LISP sources. It
- suggests that you get the main Emacs distribution to get the rest.
- Unfortunately, the current source distribution of Emacs is way too
- large. I can, however, download the whole Emacs distribution, and
- select only the files I need, then stuff those into a separate (smaller)
- tarfile, and download that. WHAT FILES will I need in the Emacs
- distribution? Probably the lisp stuff, and maybe documentation.
-
- Also, last but not least, I am sure that there are some pretty neat
- Emacs lisp creations out there. GNews and gnus come to mind , though I
- am sure there are more. What is the stuff out there I can download that
- will enhance Emacs and add new stuff, and where can I get it?
-
- Many thanks for the help. Please email replies.
