- I am currently in the middle of a heated corporate debate that surrounds the
- subject of the relative benefits offered by two solutions to the problem
- of delivering X capability to users desktops.
-
-
- Option #1: Place X-terminals on the individual office LAN's and
- provide connectivity to a large centralized database server
- via LAN's and/or WAN's.
-
- Option #2: Place intelligent workstations and small file servers in all
- offices to handle X traffic on the LAN, and provide WAN access
- to a relatively small centralized database server.
-
-
- Those in favor of "option #1" point out the savings in $$ required to deliver
- compute capability to the desktop, while those in favor of option #2 claim
- that these savings will be dramatically offset by the increased expenses
- incurred to beef up the network to handle the "enormous loads" required to
- handle the X-protocol bandwidth requirements.
-
- I understand that there are many issues here such as administration,
- security and economics but for this discussion I am most interested in the
- network.
-
- Is anyone aware of any generic studies that have been done to quantify the
- relative network requirements for the two scenario's described above? It
- seems to me that many other groups must have been faced with similar decisions
- over the past couple of years.
-
- Any information would be appreciated.
