- I have just begun ( 2 weeks ago ) writing the very thing. I too was
- unable to find such a utility, so set about filling the VOID myself. It is
- to be a Hex Viewer/Editor with a difference.
-
- Alas it remains in pre-BETA stages, as i have begun my 2nd Semester,2nd
- year in Electrical ( Computer ) Engineering, and as such cannot devote it my
- undivided attention. (approx 3 hours /week)
-
- It will encompass many functions, least of which will be the GUI interactive
- Byte/Byte editing, string searching and replacing etc. The intial platform
- will be Sun's XView using OpenLOOK ( I have unlimited acces to SPARCS ), but i
- have since begun porting the initial stages to DECstations as well (OSF/Motif).
-
- Eventually it will comply to ICCCM and the modifications for each GUI will
- be neatly compiled into the SKELETON source.
-
- The Main FEATURE is the inclusion of a simple SCRIPT langauge interfaced to
- the program. The SCRIPT's will serve as a modification procedure for a file on
- a BYTE level! Such routines as changing headers, revamping the file for picture
- format conversions, editing out newline characters etc can be written in SCRIPT
- and stored in database fashion to be called later. Headers can be 'learned'
- such as those of "BRAIN FILES" for virus checkers.
- The result is a "ONE STOP" converting program which can be universal and
- grow with the additions of more SCRIPTS.
-
- If someone feels this is a reasonably good idea and decides to write a utility
- along these lines, i would very much like to be involved in the development.
- Time may be on there side.
-
- Eric: I do in fact have a HEX viewer i wrote myself, which works very much like
- the UNIX 'more' command. Email me and i shall send it to you!
-
- P.S
- I am looking for VOCATIONAL ( WORK EXPERIENCE ) in the Compter(Engineering)
- field during December 1992-February 1993 (3 - 6 weeks), or 3 weeks in June
- 1993. (Preferably in the United States ).
- If any one knows of such a position or has one available , please
